Why Not Me: Wynonna Judd and Bob Weir Jam at The Fillmore

Wynonna Judd, known for continually defying expectations, did it again with a recent performance at San Francisco’s historic Fillmore. Backed by Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir on guitar, Wynonna & the Big Noise delivered a set that blended country, rock, and Americana, showcasing Judd’s evolving musical journey since forming the band in 2016.

The highlight of the evening was the unexpected collaboration between Judd and Weir. The pair performed a trio of iconic Grateful Dead songs: “Ramble on Rose,” “Truckin’,” and “Althea.” Weir also joined the band for a rendition of his own co-written classic, “Jack Straw.” This musical crossover demonstrated the versatility of both artists and the enduring power of the Grateful Dead’s music.

Weir’s presence extended beyond the Dead covers. He remained on stage with Wynonna & the Big Noise for several other songs, including the Judds’ 1987 hit “I Know Where I’m Going,” their breakout single “Why Not Me,” and Wynonna’s solo hits “Rock Bottom” and “No One Else on Earth.” This collaboration infused these familiar tunes with fresh energy and showcased the musical chemistry between the two artists.

The encore featured additional guest appearances, including Cass McCombs, who performed his own set earlier in the evening. Weir rejoined the stage for a dynamic cover of Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast as You,” and a blues-infused rendition of the Judds’ classic ballad “Love Can Build a Bridge.”

Wynonna & the Big Noise continue their tour, with upcoming shows in San Juan Capistrano, El Cajon, Tucson, and the Midwest. This tour promises a dynamic blend of classic hits and fresh interpretations, further solidifying Wynonna Judd’s status as a musical icon who continues to evolve and surprise. The collaboration with Bob Weir at The Fillmore stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to connect artists and audiences across genres.
