About
The “Why Is Everyone So Mean To Me?” meme, often recognized by the phrase accompanied by an image of a man with prominent buttocks, is an ironic expression of feeling unloved or mistreated. Emerging in 2019, this exploitable image macro has spurred numerous redraws and variations, becoming a recognizable fixture in internet humor.
Origin Story
The genesis of this meme can be traced back to October 16, 2011, when ManAvenue, a website featuring gay pornography, published a shower photoshoot starring adult model Dalton (also known as Jon Selects). [1][2] Among the images was a photograph capturing Dalton from behind in the shower, emphasizing his physique (seen below, left). This particular photo gained traction online over the years,[3][4] frequently appearing in collections of erotic images.
Years later, before July 1st, 2019, a Twitter user with the handle @johnny_jizzle (account now suspended) created two ironic image macros. One of these macros utilized the Dalton photograph and added the caption: “No one loves me and that’s okay. Everyone is mean 2 me 💔”. This marked the birth of the meme (shown below, center and right). The earliest documented repost of this image macro appeared on July 1st, 2019, from Twitter user @dumgri.[5]

A cropped version of the macro, focusing more intensely on the lower half of the image and the meme’s core message, began circulating widely in October 2019. On October 16th, 2019, Redditor marcobmartinez shared the first known repost of this cropped version.[6] The meme gained further momentum when the Facebook page Ttony hawk skate board reposted it on December 17th, 2019.[7] This Facebook post garnered over 390 reactions and 850 shares, leading to increased visibility across Facebook, Instagram,[8] and other social media platforms in early 2020.
Meme Spread and Evolution
The meme’s popularity truly took off with the emergence of redraws, showcasing its versatility and adaptability. On May 24th, 2020, Twitter user @napstachill posted the first viral redraw,[9] reimagining the meme with a Wreck-It-Ralph character. This tweet resonated widely, accumulating over 5,400 retweets and 28,200 likes within a year (tweet and image shown below). This Wreck-It-Ralph rendition demonstrated the meme’s potential to be incorporated into different fandoms and artistic styles.

These were posted by Twitter user @AstroMonster312[12] and another unidentified user, respectively, quickly gaining traction across social media (shown below, left and right). Notably, Instagram reposts of the Among Us version by accounts grandmas.butt and goofed.goober on December 14th garnered over 25,000 and 9,000 likes within a year,[13][[14]](#fn14] highlighting the meme’s broad appeal and comedic value within different online communities.
