Why God? Wrestling with Faith in Difficult Times

Life throws curveballs. Spilled coffee, harsh criticism, a flat tire – these small frustrations can trigger the question, “Why God, why?” While seemingly insignificant compared to the suffering others endure, these moments echo a deeper struggle with faith when life doesn’t meet our expectations. This article explores the age-old question of “why God” and offers insights into navigating disappointment and finding strength in faith.

When Expectations and Reality Collide

We often envision God as a wish-granter, expecting Him to intervene and fix our problems. However, if God consistently fulfilled our desires, He would be more akin to a personal assistant than the divine being He is. John the Baptist, imprisoned for speaking truth to power, likely grappled with this very dilemma. He anticipated Jesus’ rescue, questioning why the Messiah wouldn’t intervene in his dire circumstances.

John’s plea, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:3), reflects the universal cry for divine intervention amidst suffering. Instead of a dramatic prison break, Jesus responded by highlighting the miracles He performed: the blind seeing, the lame walking, the good news preached to the poor. This indirect answer reaffirmed Jesus’ identity as the Messiah, emphasizing faith over immediate relief.

Finding Blessing in Unexpected Places

Jesus’ subsequent statement, “Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me” (Matthew 11:6), challenges our understanding of blessing. True blessing lies not in the absence of hardship, but in unwavering faith despite disappointment. It’s about trusting God’s goodness even when His actions don’t align with our expectations. Broken relationships, unmet prayers, persistent struggles – these realities can shake our faith. Yet, Jesus suggests that true blessedness resides in accepting God’s will even when it’s painful.

Embracing God’s Goodness Amidst Disappointment

God doesn’t guarantee a problem-free life. Our circumstances don’t necessarily reflect His goodness, but His presence does. The blessing lies in trusting Him in the valleys of life, even after witnessing Him move mountains. Sometimes the blessing is present even without the breakthrough we desire.

Navigating Difficult Seasons

If you’re facing challenges, remember that God is not indifferent to your pain. He welcomes your questions and desires an open and honest relationship with you. Keep seeking Him through prayer, expressing your doubts and frustrations. Your story is not over. Continue hoping, seeking, and asking. God’s goodness remains constant, even in the midst of disappointment. He invites us to find strength in His presence, not just in His provision.
