Why Did Sasha Banks Leave WWE?

Sasha Banks, now known as Mercedes Mone, leaving WWE in 2022 was a major wrestling event. While her tag team partner Naomi eventually returned, Banks embarked on a new path. This article explores the reasons behind her departure, her subsequent career moves, and the possibility of a future WWE return.

On May 16, 2022, WWE announced that Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out due to creative differences. This led to their suspension and eventual release. While Naomi rejoined WWE, Banks transitioned to Mercedes Mone, joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and Stardom.

In a recent interview, Mone admitted leaving WWE was difficult, given her accomplishments there. However, she expressed pride in her decision, stating it allowed her to live her best life. This suggests a desire for greater creative control and new challenges beyond the WWE environment.

Rumors circulated in late 2023 that Mone, a free agent, was negotiating with both AEW and WWE. Ultimately, she chose AEW, reportedly due to a higher salary and greater flexibility for her acting career, facilitated by AEW’s relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Mone debuted in AEW on March 13, 2024, during the “Big Business” episode of Dynamite. She made a significant impact, saving Willow Nightingale from an attack, solidifying her presence in the company.

Despite her success in AEW, Mone hasn’t ruled out a future WWE return. She has publicly stated she has “unfinished business” there, leaving the door open for a potential comeback. This suggests a complex relationship with WWE, acknowledging past successes while pursuing new opportunities.

Interestingly, former WWE colleagues Bayley, Naomi, and Tamina Snuka attended Mone’s AEW debut in disguise, demonstrating ongoing support from within the wrestling community. This highlights the personal connections that transcend company boundaries.

Mone’s departure from WWE appears motivated by a desire for creative freedom, better compensation, and opportunities outside wrestling. While thriving in AEW, her comments about “unfinished business” hint at a possible WWE return down the line, leaving fans to speculate about her future.
