Scarlett Pomers’ Battle with Anorexia

Pomers was a consistent presence on Reba for the first four seasons, portraying the quick-witted and rebellious middle child, Kyra. However, during season five, she appeared in only two episodes. The reason for her reduced screen time was her struggle with anorexia nervosa, a severe eating disorder.

By late 2005, Pomers’ weight had dropped to a dangerously low level, necessitating professional treatment. She entered a facility to focus on her recovery, taking a leave of absence from Reba. In 2006, after leaving treatment, Pomers bravely shared her story, raising awareness about eating disorders and advocating for those facing similar challenges.

Kyra’s Return to Reba and the In-Joke

Pomers returned to Reba for its sixth and final season, receiving a warm welcome from the studio audience. The show addressed Kyra’s absence with a lighthearted joke. When Reba asks Kyra where she’s been, Kyra simply replies, “I went to get something to eat.”

This line, repeated throughout the episode, subtly acknowledged Pomers’ real-life struggle with anorexia. While potentially sensitive, the joke seemed to be made with Pomers’ consent, given her return to the show. She has never publicly expressed discomfort with the joke.

Scarlett Pomers’ Life After Reba

Following Reba‘s conclusion, Pomers shifted her focus away from acting. She dedicated herself to advocacy work, continuing to raise awareness about eating disorders through organizations like the National Eating Disorders Association and her own charity, Arch-Angels.

Pomers pursued other artistic passions, including music and photography. She formed a band called SCARLETT and released an EP titled Insane. She also explored jewelry making with an online store. More recently, Pomers has indicated an interest in writing and directing, particularly within the horror genre. While she has largely retired from acting, she remains a prominent advocate for eating disorder awareness.
