Why Are Hot Dogs Called Glizzy? Exploring the Hot Dog Nickname

The term “glizzy” has emerged as a popular slang word for “hot dog,” particularly gaining traction online and in certain communities. While the exact origins are debated, its increasing use, especially among younger generations and on social media platforms like TikTok, is undeniable. One individual who has become notably associated with this moniker is Elizabeth “Glizzy Lizzy” Salgado, a competitive eater from California. Her participation in Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition in July 2023 brought the term “glizzy” further into the spotlight. Although she didn’t set any records by consuming 4.25 hot dogs in 10 minutes, her chosen nickname, “Glizzy Lizzy,” resonated widely and contributed to the ongoing viral trend of using “glizzy” to refer to hot dogs.

Salgado’s adoption of the “Glizzy Lizzy” title seems genuinely earned, predating her foray into competitive eating. According to reports, her coworkers initially gave her the nickname due to her pronounced fondness for hot dogs. For Salgado, competitive eating began almost as an impromptu decision, ticking off a bucket list item by participating in Nathan’s renowned competition.

However, this initial experience has sparked a more serious interest in competitive eating for Salgado. She now intends to participate in future hot dog eating contests, committing to year-round training. Prior to her appearance at the main event held annually on Independence Day at Coney Island, the original location of Nathan’s Famous, Glizzy Lizzy had already competed in a qualifying round in Pleasanton, California in June 2023. There, she impressively consumed 8.75 “glizzies.” In July 2024, she returned to the main stage competition, finishing thirteenth with 5.5 hot dogs – a substantial amount for a ten-minute eating period and further cementing her association with the “glizzy” name in the competitive eating world.
