The first season of “13 Reasons Why” was undeniably impactful. It grabbed attention immediately, proving to be both intriguing and deeply unsettling. The narrative was captivating, the execution was skillful, the acting was compelling, and by the season’s conclusion, it lingered in my thoughts, earning high praise and consistent recommendations. However, as the series progressed into subsequent seasons, the initial spark diminished rapidly, leaving a sense of disappointment.
-
Season 1: Rating 10/10. It was exceptional and should have served as the conclusive chapter.
-
Season 2: Rating 7.5/10. This season explored the aftermath of the initial events, but included unnecessary scenes featuring Hannah Baker, which ultimately did not honor her story effectively.
-
Season 3: Rating 5/10. The writing began to falter, stretching the narrative thin. The introduction of a new character, Ani, felt forced and illogical within the established storyline. Her character was marked by dishonesty, an unwelcome presence, and unconvincing acting.
-
Season 4: Rating 2.5/10. This season devolved into something akin to a comedic parody, reminiscent of films like “Scary Movie.” While attempting to convey messages of compassion, the contrast between love and hatred, and the balance of sanity versus insanity, it also unrealistically amplified issues such as anxiety and depression. Although these are crucial topics that were present from the first season, their portrayal and development within the evolving storyline became weak, unpersuasive, and ultimately unconvincing.
It seems those in charge lost sight of the core narrative: Hannah Baker’s story and her tragic journey. They overlooked her pain, her suffering, and the profound sense of hopelessness that resonated so deeply with viewers.
Extending a series centered on Hannah Baker and her experiences, particularly without her active presence, felt like a disservice. While Liberty High and its world were initially engaging, without Hannah at its heart, it became a mere shadow of its former self.
Hannah, your profound trauma and the extreme measure you took to highlight critical issues will not be forgotten. Your story served its purpose. It is sincerely hoped that others facing similar struggles find the strength and courage to speak out before it is too late.
